Depression (major depressive disorder) is a common and serious medical illness that negatively affects how you feel, the way you think and how you act. Fortunately, it is also treatable. It can lead to a variety of emotional and physical problems and can decrease a person’s ability to function at work and at home. It also lead to suicide.
There are many forms of depressive disorders, and they may vary in severity. In most cases, the person with a depressive disorder needs medical attention in order to heal, and the person may be unable to obtain that help alone. That’s why is so important for families to be able to spot depression in those they love. When the condition is identified, the healing can begin.

Depending on the number and severity of symptoms, a depressive episode can be categorised as mild, moderate or severe.
It varies from person to person, but there are some common signs and symptoms. It’s important to remember that these symptoms can be part of life’s normal lows. But the more symptoms you have, the stronger they are, and the longer they’ve lasted—the more likely it is that you’re dealing with depression.

Some Common symptoms of depression :-

  • Feelings of helplessness and hopelessness.
  • Pessimism and hopelessness.
  • Anger or Irritability.
  • Restlessness.
  • Loss of interest in things once pleasurable, including sex.
  • Digestive problems that don’t get better, even with treatment.
  • Suicidal thoughts or attempts.
  • Loss of energy.
  • Concentration problems.
  • Reckless behavior.
  • Overeating, or appetite loss.
  • Isolated and alone.

It is among the most treatable of mental disorders. Between 80 percent and 90 percent of people with depression eventually respond well to treatment. Almost all patients gain some relief from their symptoms.

How to Deal ?

The mainstay of treatment is usually medication, talk therapy or a combination of the two. Increasingly, research suggests that these treatments may normalize brain changes associated with depression.
Most types of depression respond to antidepressant medications, psychotherapy, or a combination of both.

  • Medications :
    SSRIs (Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor) – Eases symptoms of depressed mood and anxiety.

    Antidepressant – Taking medications designed to help relieve symptoms of depression. Some antidepressants also have other uses, such as treating chronic pain and certain anxiety disorders.

    Anxiolytic – Relieves anxiety and tension. May promote sleep.
  • Therapies :
    Cognitive behavioural therapy – A talk therapy focused on modifying negative thoughts, behaviour and emotional responses associated with psychological distress.

    Behaviour therapy – A therapy focused on modifying harmful behaviours associated with psychological distress.

    Psychotherapy – Treatment of mental or behavioural disorders through talk therapy.
  • Medical procedure :
    Electroconvulsive therapy – Treating mental illness by sending electric currents through the brain to trigger a seizure. Also known as shock treatment.

Are there any Risks with Depression ?

It carries a high risk of suicide. Suicidal thoughts or intentions are serious. Any suicidal symptoms should be considered medical emergencies. People who are depressed are rarely trying to get attention and scare people.
People who are depressed also have increased rates of drug and alcohol abuse. They may begin to use substances in order to ease their pain. They may develop addictions to those substances that they cannot control. These addictions can also cause problems of their own, and they must also be treated.
